Affiliate Cookie Tracking: How It Works and Why It Matters
Affiliate Cookie Tracking Explained
Cookie-based tracking is the foundation of affiliate attribution. When a visitor clicks an affiliate link, a cookie is set in their browser to remember which affiliate referred them. If the visitor later makes a purchase, the cookie connects the sale back to the affiliate.
How Cookie Tracking Works
- Visitor clicks an affiliate link (e.g.,
yoursite.com/?ref=abc123) - Your tracking script reads the
refparameter - A first-party cookie is set on the visitor browser
- When the visitor purchases, the cookie value is sent with the checkout
- The affiliate platform matches the cookie to the affiliate and creates a commission
First-Party vs Third-Party Cookies
First-Party Cookies
Set by the domain the visitor is on. These are the most reliable because browsers do not block them.
PartnerForge uses first-party cookies exclusively — our tracking script runs on your domain and sets cookies under your domain.
Third-Party Cookies
Set by a different domain than the one being visited. Major browsers are phasing these out:
- Safari: blocked since 2020
- Firefox: blocked since 2021
- Chrome: restrictions increasing through 2026
If your affiliate platform relies on third-party cookies, you are losing attribution on a growing percentage of traffic.
Cookie Windows
The cookie window is how long the attribution lasts. If a visitor clicks an affiliate link today and purchases 45 days later, a 30-day cookie would miss that conversion, but a 60-day cookie would capture it.
Common cookie windows:
- 7 days: Too short for most SaaS (long consideration cycles)
- 30 days: Standard minimum
- 60 days: Recommended for most SaaS
- 90 days: Best for high-ACV products with longer sales cycles
Beyond Cookies: Coupon Code Attribution
Cookies fail when:
- Visitor switches devices
- Visitor clears cookies
- Visitor uses private browsing
Coupon code attribution provides a fallback. Assign unique coupon codes to affiliates. When a customer uses the code at checkout, the sale is attributed regardless of cookies.
PartnerForge supports both cookie and coupon code attribution simultaneously.
